Wilkhahn at the Design PRIMA in London: promoting design made in Germany
[05-28-2009] From 2 to 4 June 2009, Wilkhahn is showcasing innovative new products for high quality conference and communications environments at the UK’s most prestigious design exhibition. The Wilkhahn collection ranges from Ceno, an upholstered chair, a lounge chair called Velas and the re-issue of Walter Papst’s famous three-legged wooden chair.
The stand at the Business Design Centre focuses on Wilkhahn’s core competencies: furnishing different communications and conference environments where interiors harmonise with the needs of the individual, communications processes and advanced media technology. As a result, the products are high quality, understated, minimised to the max and designed to last. New products are presented in three different areas.

Meeting area: where people attend high-tech presentations and meetings, or eat together In the past, formal and informal meetings were held in different rooms, but today both are often in the same place. As a result, superior interior design solutions are required that respond to both demands. In the meeting area, the table system Travis, the Gravis sideboard (both designed by wiege) and Ceno, the upholstered chair (designed by Läufer + Keichel) show how conference rooms can be effortlessly transformed.

Ceno combines the functionality of a stackable conference chair with the look and feel of a dining room chair. Carefully thought-out details, high-quality materials, precise workmanship and ingeniously simple joints are a guarantee of comfort at dinner or during long conferences.
The Travis table system and the sideboard from the new Gravis range (both designed by wiege) are a distinctive expression of their versatility. In this case, the emphasis is placed on the aesthetic and professional quality of the furniture with integrated state-of-the-art technology. And of course it is simple to handle, encouraging as opposed to hampering personal interaction.

The Travis table range has generous tabletops with up to a three metre span between the table legs. An uncluttered look, flexibility in placing the chairs and ease of access when cleaning are what makes Travis so remarkable. At the same time, media equipment can be perfectly integrated into the table system. The retractable cable channels, made of aluminium profiles, have connectivity boxes that can be custom fitted. Integrated equipment and retractable screens or projection systems are also possible.

The Gravis range stands for a fusion of unobtrusive form and appealing technical details. The sideboard is understated and consists of cores encased in a shell. Damped opening and closing mechanisms, drawers with self-closing runners (optionally with electronic extension and a radio-controlled locking system) ensure ease of use.

Fascinating minimalism in the lounge area In the lounge area at the London exhibition, Wilkhahn’s stylish chair Velas (designed by Eric Degenhardt) reveals its outstanding qualities in terms of look and comfort. The fluid transition of the foot section into the upholstered seat frame are a fascinating example of subtle minimalism. The chair offers extreme comfort thanks to 3D knitting technology in the lined cover. A footstool and a three-legged side table complement the range.
Whether you put it in the kitchen, workshop or in a creative meeting place, Walter Papst’s three-legged chair is a winner. Photo: Wilkhahn
Papst area with rocking sculpture and three-legged chair The Papst area is devoted to avant-garde designer Walter Papst who is little known internationally, but nevertheless a major force. As well as the famous red rocking sculpture, Wilkhahn is showing the re-issue of his three-legged wooden chair for the first time at the Design PRIMA. Papst based the chair on the original: a three-legged chair made of wooden parts that are easily slotted together. He transformed this age-old concept into an innovative board-type chair that combines clear-cut shapes and lines with excellent craftsmanship. In this re-issue of the chair, materials, shapes and proportions perfectly reflect the original. At the same time, the chair leg, seat and backrest connections were enhanced so the chair could be made in solid wood. Similarly to the 1955 original, the three-legged chair is available in an adult and child version.
